저자(글) Shlomo Sand

이스라엘 텔아비브대학교 역사학 교수. 1946년 오스트리아 린츠에서 태어났다. 홀로코스트에서 생존한 폴란드계 유대인 가정에서 태어나 1948년 ‘나크바’(이스라엘의 팔레스타인 침탈) 시기에 이스라엘 야파로 이주, 이스라엘-팔레스타인 문화 속에서 성장했다. 16세에 학교에서 퇴학당하고 라디오 수리기사, 전화교환원 등으로 일하다가 1967년 이스라엘과 아랍 간의 ‘6일 전쟁’ 시기에 군에 입대했다. 당시 군인으로서 이스라엘의 팔레스타인인 학살을 목격하고 “고국을 잃었다”는 느낌으로 큰 회의에 빠져 반시오니즘 급진좌파 운동에 합류했다. 1975년 텔아비브대학교 역사학과를 졸업했고, 1985년까지 프랑스 사회과학고등연구원에서 연구하고 가르치며 프랑스사와 마르크스주의에 대한 논문으로 박사학위를 받았다. 이후 이스라엘에 돌아와 종신교수로 모교에서 유럽 근현대사를 가르치고 있다. 2008년 히브리어로 출간되고 2009년 영어로 번역된 『만들어진 유대인』(원제 ‘유대인은 언제, 어떻게 발명되었는가’)이 세계적 명성을 얻으면서 산드는 “외국어로 가장 많이 번역된 이스라엘 역사서”의 저자로 알려지게 되었다. 유대인이자 이스라엘인으로서 ‘유대국가’ 이스라엘과 유대인의 정체성 신화에 대해 통렬한 비판과 근본적 의문을 던진 몇 안 되는 지식인으로 각인되면서, 에릭 홉스봄, 토니 주트, 베네딕트 앤더슨 등의 민족주의 비판가들과 같은 대열의 학자로 인정받고 있다. 저서로는 『만들어진 유대인』의 속편 격인 『이스라엘 땅의 발명』, 『유대인, 불쾌한 진실』이 있고, 최근 『프랑스 지식인의 종말: 유대인 혐오에서 이슬람 혐오까지』를 출간하여 다시금 주목을 받고 있다.
