Hulbert)의 삶과 업적을 다룬 신간 『What About KOREA?』가 3년여간의 작업 끝에 출간되었다. 이 책은 저자 김동진 (사)헐버트박사기념사업회 회장이 수십 년간 헐버트의 삶을 연구한 결과물을 집대성한 작품으로 한미 양국 및 전 세계의 독자들에게 헐버트의 헌신적 행보와 학자적 풍모를 재조명하는 기회를 제공한다. 헐버트는 1886년 고종의 초빙으로 조선에 온 후 근대 교육과 한국학 연구에 기여했으며, 일본의 식민지배에 맞서 한국의 독립을 최선봉에 서서 지원한 인물이다. 그는 1905년과 1907년 두 차례에 걸쳐 고종 황제의 특사로 임명되어 각각 미국과 헤이그를 방문해 한국의 주권을 되찾기 위해 노력했으며, 1919년에는 미국 상원에 「What About Korea?」라는 한국 독립 호소문을 제출해 일본의 잔학상을 고발하고 한국의 완전 독립을 촉구했다. 본 저서는 헐버트의 교육자이자 한글학자, 역사학자, 언론인, 황제의 밀사, 독립운동가로서의 다양한 면모를 보여 주며, 그가 한글 등 한국의 역사와 문화를 세계에 알리는 데 기여한 과정을 상세히 담고 있다. 또한, 헐버트가 남긴 회고록, 기고문, 편지 및 언론 기사 등을 통해 그의 사상과 철학을 살펴보고, 한국 독립운동에 대한 그의 헌신을 되새긴다. 저자인 김동진 회장은 헐버트와 그의 업적에 대해 다음과 같이 밝혔다. "헐버트는 단순한 교육자가 아닌, 한국을 진심으로 사랑했던 인물입니다. 그는 생전에 ‘나는 웨스트민스터 사원보다 한국에 묻히기를 원한다’라고 말하며, 한국과의 깊은 유대감을 표현했습니다. 이 책을 통해 더 많은 사람들이 헐버트의 업적을 기억하고, 그의 정신을 되새기는 계기가 되기를 바랍니다." 헐버트는 1949년 이승만 대통령의 국빈 초청을 받아 40년 만에 서울을 방문한 후 생을 마감했으며, 그의 유언에 따라 서울 양화진 외국인 묘지에 안장되었다. 대한민국 정부는 그의 공로를 기리기 위해 1950년 건국공로훈장 태극장, 금관문화훈장(2014년)을 추서했다. 서울아리랑페스티벌은 2015년 그에게 구전으로 전해오던 아리랑을 현대화한 공로로 서울아리랑상을 수여했다. 『What About KOREA?』는 한국 근현대사와 국제관계에 관심이 있는 독자들에게 깊은 통찰을 제공하는 동시에 한국 독립운동에 기여한 외국인의 헌신을 새롭게 밝히는 중요한 국제판 기록물로 자리 잡을 것이다.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Korean War, another inspiring story that sprouted in the midst of the war was published as a book. Joungwon Kim’s journey began when he encountered war correspondent Bill Boss from Canada, who opened his eyes to the world beyond Korea. With just $300, he embarked on his studies in the United States, ultimately earning degrees from Columbia University, Johns Hopkins SAIS, and Harvard Law School. This book vividly chronicles his encounters with key figures in academia, diplomacy, and law, painting a compelling picture of the times. Compiled posthumously by Memorial Association for Dr. Joungwon Kim in collaboration with the Aging Communication Center, this book is available in both Korean and English, with the English translation undertaken by his former student, Professor Timothy Atkinson of Seoul Foreign Language Graduate School, and reviewed by Charles Olmsted, former professor at Gimcheon University. A Trailblazing Life of “Firsts” Joungwon Kim’s life was marked by a series of historic firsts: the first Korean student at Phillips Exeter Academy (p.40), the first Korean student body president at Harvard University (p.64), the first Korean author published in the world-renowned journal Foreign Affairs (p.109), the key figure behind the introduction of Korean politicians Kim Young-sam and Kim Dae-jung to Washington’s political circles (pp.29, 115), and the first Korean lawyer to join a major Wall Street law firm (p.129). His journey across academia, diplomacy, and law offers a gripping narrative of ambition and service. A True Noblesse Oblige: A Legacy of Giving Inspired by his grandfather, who donated his entire fortune to local schools, Joungwon Kim lived a life of generosity. While at Harvard, he refused financial support from his parents, arguing that his tuition-over 20 times Korea’s per capita GDP-should instead be used to fund scholarships for 50 to 100 other Korean students (p.62). Despite earning two doctorate degrees from the most prestigious U.S. institutions, he relied primarily on scholarships and considered it his duty to repay this debt to society. Without seeking publicity, he quietly dedicated himself to philanthropy throughout his life. What We Leave Behind and How We Are Remembered Joungwon Kim’s final chapter was guided by the Aging Communication Center’s Legacy Project, which preserves personal histories as cultural heritage. This initiative donates significant life artifacts to museums and libraries, ensuring that individual legacies contribute to the collective good. His personal belongings-90 boxes of household items-were donated to seven charitable organizations, while 682 books and historical records were gifted to institutions including the War Memorial of Korea, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, the Presidential Archives, the Yongsan History Museum, the National Assembly Library, the Korea National Diplomatic Academy Library, and the National Library of Korea. Proceeds from book sales will be allocated to scholarship funds. A Life Devoted to Korea and Democracy Throughout his student years, Joungwon Kim displayed unwavering patriotism, hanging a large Korean flag (Taegeukgi) in his dormitory to remind himself of his homeland and family (p.48). Representing the United States at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Helsinki, he carried the Taegeukgi to promote Korea on the international stage (p.93). During Korea’s pro-democracy movement of the 1980s, his book Divided Korea became essential reading for social science students (p.164). Upon returning to Korea in 1987, he played a pivotal role in communicating the realities of Korean politics to the international community, effectively serving as the foreign press spokesperson for the United Democratic Movement (p.140).

≪한국의 역사와 문화≫는 한국에 대해 체계적으로 배우고자 하는 외국인을 위한 한국학 기초 교재이다. 한 국가가 가진 고유한 정체성(identity)을 인식하는 데 있어서 가장 기초가 되는 것은 역사와 문화라 할 수 있다. 외국인들이 한국의 역사와 문화를 쉽고 체계적으로 배울 수 있도록 이 책은 크게 세 부분으로 구성하였다. 한반도에 사람이 살기 시작한 시기부터 오늘에 이르기까지 한국사의 역사적 전개 과정을 다루는 〈한국의 역사〉(1부), 한국적인 사상과 이러한 사상에서 생겨난 한국문화를 소개한 〈한국의 사상과 문화〉(2부), 마지막으로 한국의 세계적인 문화유산을 소개한 〈한국의 세계문화유산〉(3부)이 그것이다. 이를 통해 외국인들은 한국적인 것의 특징이 무엇이며 이러한 특징이 어떻게 형성되었는가를 배울 수 있을 것이다.

재단에서는 그동안 역사인식의 차이를 좁히기 위해 동아시아 역사에 대한 연구 및 국제 학술교류를 꾸준히 진행해 왔다. 그 결과는 다양한 시리즈의 역사관련 단행본으로 간행되어 많은 사람들의 공감을 얻었다. 다만 대부분 한국어 간행물이라는 점은 국경을 넘어 세계시민과 공유하고 소통하는 데 한계가 있었고, 이에 그 동안의 연구 성과를 국제사회에 알리고, 역사인식 차이를 해소할 수 있는 소통의 장을 마련하기 위해 History & Culture Series를 기획하였다. 이 시리즈는 동아시아 역사 및 영토·해양 문제 등 학계 또는 국가 사이에 쟁점이 되고 있는 문제를 이해하는 데 도움이 될 수 있는 주제들로 구성될 것이다. 재단에서 발행하는 이 시리즈가 동아시아 지역에서 발생하고 있는 역사 갈등을 정확히 이해하고, 역사인식의 차이를 줄여 나가는 데 크게 기여할 수 있게 되기를 기대한다. 이 책은 이 시리즈의 첫 번째 책으로, 2021년에 출간했던 일제침탈사 바로알기 시리즈 『조선민중이 체험한 ‘징용’』을 영문 번역하여 출간하였다. 일제시기 강제동원 이슈가 보편화 되고 있는 현 상황에서 우리나라 입장의 강제동원 교양서를 영문 번역하여 출간하여 일반 외국인들 대상으로 역사 사실에 대한 접근 편의 제공 및 일제침탈사에 대한 이해를 진작시키고자 하였다.

이 책은 식민·해방·분단·전쟁기 전남의 영광·강진·능주의 지역사회 변동을 다룬 것이다. 이 시기는 한국인들이 식민지화, 해방, 남북분단, 그리고 남북 간의 전쟁을 겪어야만 했던 시기로, 지역사회에서는 혼란이 거듭되던 시기였다. 특히 해방 이후 한국전쟁기까지가 그러했다. 지역사회에서 이 시대를 살아간 이들은 어느 쪽이 옳은지, 어느 쪽을 선택해야 할 것인지 곤혹스러울 때가 많았다. 수시로 세상이 뒤집어지는 것을 보면서 상황이 앞으로 어떻게 바뀔지 판단하기란 매우 어려웠다. 이 책의 주제는 이와 같은 ‘혼돈의 시대’인 식민·해방·분단·전쟁기 전남의 영광, 강진, 능주의 지역사회가 어떠한 변동을 보였는가 하는 것이다.

연세대학교 국학연구원에서 『고려사절요』 Ⅱb(권18-23)를 영문으로 번역 출간하였다. 이 책은 에드워드 슐츠 교수(하와이대학)가 앞서 출간한 『고려사절요』 Ⅱa(권11-17)를 이은 속편이다. 국학연구원에서는 2006년부터 『고려사절요』의 영역 작업을 진행하였는데, 이번에 중권 부분을 영역 출간한 것이다. 널리 알려져 있듯이 『고려사절요』는 『고려사』와 함께 고려시대의 역사를 연구하고 학습할 때 기초가 되는 역사책이다. 이 책을 영문으로 번역함으로써 한국학 연구자의 국제화에 활용되고, 미국과 유럽 등 영어권에서 한국의 역사와 문화를 이해하고 연구하는 기초 자료로 참고될 수 있을 것이다.

이 책은 한국어를 배우는 학생들 뿐만 아니라 한ㆍ일 간의 역사 인식에 관심을 가지고 계시는, 특히 한국 젊은이들의 역사 문제에 대한 강한 주관이 어디서 배양된 것일까? 하고 궁금해 하시는 분들께 꼭 권하고 싶은 책입니다. 본서는 역사관의 양면성이 잘 나타나는 서적이며, 독자가 이해하기 쉽도록 해설을 덧붙인 점과 역사적 사실을 단편적으로 나열한 것이 아니라 인과 관계 속에서 전ㆍ후의 내용이 유기적으로 연결되어 있는 것이 특징입니다.

한국어교육에서도 한국문화(문학 포함) 영역을 담당하면서 외국인 학습자들이 한국문화를 좀 더 쉽게 이해하도록 하기 위한 교재를 서둘러서 만든 초판 교재가 지나고 보니 부분적인 오류와 함께 아쉬운 부분들이 있었다. 그동안 초판 2쇄, 3쇄를 거치면서 이런 오류와 아쉬운 점들을 땜질하듯 메우기는 했지만, 전면적으로 내용을 다시 살피면서 고칠 필요가 있었다. 특히 본문 내용을 많이 고치고, 확인학습과 체험 공감의 장, 상호 소통의 장의 내용도 상당 부분 수정을 가했다. 또한 본문 내용을 수정 보완하다 보니, 그와 연관된 어휘 풀이도 전면적으로 다시 살펴서 첨삭과 보완을 해야 했다. 이번에 개정판을 내지만, 초판 교재를 낼 때 도움을 주었던 당시 석, 박사과정 학생들에게도 여전히 고마운 마음을 전한다. 이분들 중에는 한국어교육의 현장에서 계속 분투하고 있는 분들도 있지만, 불가피한 사정으로 한국어교육의 현장을 떠난 분들도 상당수 된다. 한국어교육의 현실은 여전히 어려운 상황이다. 더구나 코로나19가 몰아치고 있는 상황은 한국어교육의 현실을 더욱 어렵게 하고 있다. 이 어려움에서 빨리 벗어나기를 바란다. 한국어교육은 조만간 다시 각광을 받을 것으로 확신한다. 초판 당시 원고 검토를 해주고 조언을 주신 경북대 최은숙 교수님의 이름이 이번 개정판에서 빠지게 되었다. 필자가 전면적으로 원고를 수정, 보완한 상황을 이해해 주어서 고맙다. 이번 개정판도 널리 사용되어 한국문화 교육에 도움이 되기를 바란다.

The American who walked into the turmoil of Korean history After graduating from university, David wanted to make a positive change in the world. He joined the Peace Corps and arrived in South Korea in 1978. He was bestowed with a Korean name, Im Dae-oon and it was his name throughout his time in Korea. He was assigned to serve as a tuberculosis worker in Yeongam, a town in Korea's southwest. He came to fall in love with the country's food,scenery, and people. On May 18, 1980, David arrived in Gwangju to transfer buses to his home, Yeongam. Tim Warnberg, his friend and fellow Peace Corps Volunteer, told him that there was brutal violence against any young people seen in the streets. He came back home but he continued to hear that the violence was getting worse and the phone lines to Gwangju had been cut. David set out for the city to check on Tim and his Korean friends.

The growth of the Republic of Korea?s wealth and democracy throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s have been well researched and documented. However, much less is written about the extremely difficult and eventful process as the nation transformed itself into one of the world?s leading technological and cultural leaders since then. The book provides keen insight into the developmental histroy of the Republic of Korea as it willingly and sometimes reluctantly embraced the phenomena of globalization, spanning from the 1997 financial crisis to the international phenomenon of K-pop.
