미국 최고의 에세이스트이자 평론가, 소설가로 1933년 1월 뉴욕에서 태어났다. 첫 소설 『은인The Benefactor』(1963)과 에세이 「‘캠프’에 대한 단상Notes on 'Camp'」(1964)을 발표하면서 문단과 학계의 주목을 받기 시작했다. 1966년 평론집 『해석에 반대한다』에서 서구 미학의 전통을 이루던 내용과 형식의 구별, 고급문화와 대중문화의 구별에 반기를 들며 화려한 명성을 얻었다. 그 뒤 극작가, 영화감독, 연극연출가, 문화비평가, 사회운동가 등 끊임없이 변신을 거듭한 손택은 ‘새로운 감수성의 사제’이자 ‘뉴욕 지성계의 여왕’, 그리고 ‘대중문화의 퍼스트레이디’로 미국 문화의 중심에 우뚝 섰다. 미국 펜클럽 회장을 역임하는 동안(1987~1989)에는 한국을 방문해 구속 문인의 석방을 촉구했고, 1993년에는 사라예보 내전 현장에 가서 <고도를 기다리며>를 상연하는 등 행동하는 지식인으로서의 면모도 아낌없이 보여 줬다. 2003년 프랑크푸르트 국제도서전에서 ‘독일출판협회 평화상’을 수상하기도 했다. 저서로는 ‘전미도서비평가협회상’을 수상한 『사진에 관하여』(1977)와 ‘전미도서상’ 소설 부분 수상작인 『인 아메리카』(1999)를 비롯해 네 권의 평론집과 여섯 권의 소설, 네 권의 에세이, 네 편의 영화 시나리오와 두 편의 희곡이 있으며 현재 32개국의 언어로 번역되어 널리 읽히고 있다. 2004년 12월, 골수성 백혈병으로 사망했다. 유해는 파리의 몽파르나스 공동묘지에 안장됐다.
