PART ONE: January 1976 CHAPTER ONE On those cloudy days, Robert Neville was never sure when sunset came, and sometimes they were in the streets before he could get back. If he had been more analytical, he might have calculated the approximate time of their arrival; but he still used the lifetime habit of judging nightfall by the sky, and on cloudy days that method didn't work. That was why he chose to stay near the house on those days. He walked around the house in the dull gray of afternoon, a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth, trailing threadlike smoke over his shoulder. He checked each window to see if any of the boards had been loosened. After violent attacks, the planks were often split or partially pried off, and he had to replace them completely; a job he hated. Today only one plank was loose. Isn't that amazing? he thought. In the back yard he checked the hothouse and the water tank. Sometimes the structure around the tank might be weakened or its rain catchers bent or broken off. Sometimes they would lob rocks over the high fence around the hothouse, and occasionally they would tear through the overhead net and he'd have to replace panes. Both the tank and the hothouse were undamaged today. He went to the house for a hammer and nails. As he pushed open the front door, he looked at the distorted reflection of himself in the cracked mirror he'd fastened to the door a month ago. In a few days, jagged pieces of the silver-backed glass would start to fall off. Let 'em fall, he thought. It was the last damned mirror he'd put there; it wasn't worth it. He'd put garlic there instead. Garlic always worked. He passed slowly through the dim silence of the living room, turned left into the small hallway, and left again into his bedroom. Once the room had been warmly decorated, but that was in another time. Now it was a room entirely functional, and since Neville's bed and bureau took up so little space, he had converted one side of the room into a shop. A long bench covered almost an entire wall, on its hardwood top a heavy band saw, a wood lathe, an emery wheel, and a vise. Above it, on the wall, were haphazard racks of the tools that Robert Neville used. He took a hammer from the bench and picked out a few nails from one of the disordered bins. Then he went back outside and nailed the plank fast to the shutter. The unused nails he threw into the rubble next door. For a while he stood on the front lawn looking up and down the silent length of Cimarron Street. He was a tall man, thirty-six, born of English-German stock, his features undistinguished except for the long, determined mouth and the bright blue of his eyes, which moved now over the charred ruins of the houses on each side of his. He'd burned them down to prevent them from jumping on his roof from the adjacent ones. After a few minutes he took a long, slow breath and went back into the house. He tossed the hammer on the living-room couch, then lit another cigarette and had his midmorning drink. Later he forced himself into the kitchen to grind up the five-day accumulation of garbage in the sink. He knew he should burn up the paper plates and utensils too, and dust the furniture and wash out the sinks and the bathtub and toilet, and change the sheets and pillowcase on his bed; but he didn't feel like it. For he was a man and he was alone and these things had no importance to him. * * * It was almost noon. Robert Neville was in his hothouse collecting a basketful of garlic. In the beginning it had made him sick to smell garlic in such quantity; his stomach had b

Mathesons horrifying tale, the basis for two classic horror films, comes to the big screen once again on December 14, in a new motion picture from Warner Bros. Pictures, starring Will Smith. Somehow immune to the plague that swept the planet, Robert Neville is the last human survivor in what is left of New York City--and maybe the world.

Well, ‘I am Legend’ was certainly different from those. It was real horror and scientific in many ways as well as logical. The story starts off with how Robert Neville starts his lonesome day. There’s nobody to wake up and talk to. There’s nobody to argue with. There’s nobody to contradict your idea. There’s nobody to hug you and say you’re going to be okay. There’s simply no soul around. Still all the other needs are satiated and Neville doesn’t have to worry about going hungry or having to find shelter to keep him safe. He has a house, all boarded up, with a generator to supply him enough power and enough food to last him a long time in his larder. What he lacks is only company. There are these infected zombie-like creatures but they could hardly be counted as his company. They are more like assailants and Neville’s job was to get rid of them and find another survivor like him. The job was ever demanding and Neville is only left with handful ideas to experiment on them to find out more about those infected souls. The craving for a companion drives him to the edges but after a while he gets settled on his bachelorhood. Find a way to rid the vampires. Find a way to cure them. Find it quickly. His sole purpose was focused on them and when he finally encounters another survivor like him, a woman, the feeling he comes up with is sheer irritation. I was caught off guard here. I was hoping there would come along another person, especially a woman for a bit of romance to add more spice to the book, and Neville’s reaction was nothing like I had anticipated. He was doubtful of another survivor and asks for her blood instead of welcoming her company. After the long time of craving someone tangible, Neville’s reaction was a bit of shock to me and it made me think what I would be like in that situation. No, no, I probably would’ve killed off myself a long time ago. I would’ve chosen to be gone rather than living in fear and loneliness. It takes guts to cope with your life like Neville. It turned out to be she was infected but with mutated bacteria. Unlike other infected creatures he had to butcher, her race could walk in the sun, albeit with medical aid, and was forming a new society, although still crude and small. In the end Neville realizes he had become anathema among the infected. He was abnormity and aberration and was to be eliminated. The last survivor of normal mankind and to be feared by infected new race. How inexorable…
Having grown up watching ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’, Will Smith was my hero in my teen years. His harmless sense of humor entertained me a great deal and I appreciated his music as well. Well, I belong to that ‘Boom! Shake the Room’ generation and I believe any girl of my peers have at least listened to his music once and screamed her excitement twice. My favorite movie starring Will Smith was ‘Man in Black’, and I still watch it whenever I see it on while flipping through the channels on TV. The movie makes me think my worries are petty compare to the vast universe and I shouldn’t be too overly worked up over such small stuff. After all it’s all small stuff and there’s no reason to sweat over them, unless you want to make yourself suffer for a while and get stressed out to ruin your day. Anyway I’m looking forward to watching ‘I am Legend’ as a film in December. Not only because Will Smith is in it but because the plot is great. One of my friends, who read this book a few years ago, said he wasn’t sure if Will Smith would be good enough to play Neville because the role is complicated and not a single scene in the movie should be humorous. As for me, I kept picturing Neville as Will Smith and from time to time I was confused to see the book saying stuff like Neville’s blond hair or blue eyes. It took a bit of adjustment but I have no doubt the movie will be great. Well, there’s only one way to find it out. Wait until December!
The other short stories were equally good. They were just all in my line and I savored every word gratefully. I was reminded of Shukawa Minato’s books, which I enjoyed so much. Anyone who liked Shukawa M.’s books would lose themselves in this. It’s a book to be read! Stephen King said this book bore a desire in him to be a writer and I think I now know he really meant it from the bottom of his heart. Oh, I feel like picking up the book and read it all over once again right now!
