저자 버지니아 리 버튼(1909~1968)은 미국 매사추세츠 주의 뉴튼 센터에서 태어났다. 매사추세츠 공과대학 학장인 아버지와 시인이자 음악가인 어머니에게서 사물을 보는 정확함과 예술적인 감수성을 골고루 물려받았다. 어렸을 때는 발레리나가 꿈이었으나, 나중에 샌프란시스코에 있는 캘리포니아 예술학교와 보스턴 뮤지엄 스쿨에서 수학하여 화가가 되었다. 조각가인 조지 드미트리어스와 결혼하고 나서 남편의 도움을 받아, 본디부터 타고났던 예술적인 재능을 더욱 꽃피워 당대에 최고의 걸작으로 꼽히는 그림책을 여러 권 만들어 냈다. 버튼은 만화에만 열중하는 아들을 보고 만화를 뛰어넘는 그림책을 손수 만들기로 했다. 그러나 아직 어린이가 흥미로워하는 세계를 충분히 이해하지 못한 탓에, 첫 번째 그림책은 아들로부터 외면당하고 말았다. 버튼은 좌절하지 않고 만화 장르에서 긴박한 이야기 전개 기법과 다이내믹한 화면 구성을 대담하게 받아들여, 다음 그림책인 《말괄량이 기관차 치치》를 완성했다. 물론 이 그림책은 아들의 사랑을 받았고, 그림책이 출간된 지 80년이 넘은 지금까지도 탈것 그림책의 대표작으로 꼽히고 있다. 그 뒤로 세대를 뛰어넘어 사랑받는 걸작 그림책 《작은 집 이야기》를 출간하여 1943년에 칼데콧 상을 수상하는 영예를 안았다. 국내에 소개된 작품으로 《말괄량이 기관차 치치》, 《작은 집 이야기》, 《생명의 역사》, 《케이블카 메이벨》 들이 있다
