Pardiso is the third of three volumes of a new edition and translation of Dantes's masterpiece, The Divine Comedy. Similar to volumes I Inferno and II Purgatorio, this translation will be into English prose, emphasizing the literal-vs-phonetic. A newly edited version of the Italian text will be on facing pages and includes fully comprehensive notes with the latest in contemporary scholarship.

본명은 두란테 델리 알리기에리(Durante degli Alighieri)이다. 이름은 두란테이지만 후세에는 애칭인 단테로 더 많이 불린다. 현재는 작가로 유명하지만, 당대에는 정치가로도 명망이 있었다. 1265년 이탈리아 피렌체의 귀족 가문에서 태어났다. 젊은 시절부터 청신체, 즉 '새롭고 감미로운 문체'의 대표적인 시인으로 널리 알려지기 시작했으며, 1295년 무렵부터 정치활동에 참여하기 시작하였고, 1300년 6월에는 6명으로 구성된 피렌체 최고 행정위원에 선출되기도 하였다. 그러나 당파싸움에서 패배하여 1301년 말부터 망명생활을 시작하여 이탈리아의 여러 지방을 떠돌면서 생활하였고, 결국 고향 피렌체로 돌아오지 못한 채 1321년 라벤나(Ravenna)에서 사망하였으며, 지금도 그곳에 묻혀있다. 그가 남긴 주요 작품으로 불후의 고전 '신곡'을 비롯하여 '새로운 삶', '향연', '시집'이 있으며, 라틴어로 저술한 '속어론', '제정론' 등이 있다.
