미국 문학을 대표하는 거장으로, 해마다 노벨문학상 후보로 언급될 뿐만 아니라 ‘영어로 글을 쓰는 현존 작가들 가운데 최고의 작가’라는 평가를 받고 있다. 1937년 미국 뉴욕 주 롱아일랜드에서 태어났으며, 1953년 고등학교를 최우수로 졸업하고 장학생으로 코넬 대학 공학물리학과에 입학하였다. 2학년 때 문리학부로 전과해 영문학을 공부했으며 1959년 전과목 최우수 성적으로 대학을 졸업하였다. 1960년에 보잉사(社)에 취직하나 1962년에 그만두고 이후 일정한 거처 없이 캘리포니아와 멕시코 등지에서 살았다. 1963년 첫 장편 『브이』(V)를 발표하여 문단의 극찬을 받았고 그해 출간된 최우수 데뷔 소설에 주는 윌리엄 포크너 상을 수상하였다. 1966년 두번째 장편 『제49호 품목의 경매』(The Crying of Lot 49)를 발표하여 리처드 앤드 힐다 로젠탈 상을 수상하였으며, 1973년 세번째 장편 『중력의 무지개』(Gravity`s Rainbow)를 발표하여 전미도서상을 수상하였다. 그밖의 장편으로 『바인랜드』(Vineland) 『메이슨과 딕슨』(Mason & Dixon) 『그날에 대비하여』 (Against the Day) 『고유의 결함』(Inherent Vice) 『블리딩 에지』(Bleeding Edge) 등이 있고, 소설집으로는 『느리게 배우는 사람』이 있다.
