1955년 9월 14일 오스트레일리아 시드니 교외에서 태어났다. 애시필드의 베들레헴 칼리지와 시드니 대학에서 공부했고, '시드니 모닝 헤럴드' 기자로 일하면서 주로 환경 이슈에 관한 기획 기사를 썼다. 1983년 뉴욕 컬럼비아 대학에서 저널리즘 연구로 석사 학위를 받았다. 이후 '월 스트리트 저널'에서 특파원으로 일하며 중동, 아프리카, 발칸 등지의 분쟁을 취재했다. 무슬림 여성들의 삶을 기록한 '욕망에 관한 아홉 개의 장'과 청소년기에 주고받은 해외 펜팔 경험을 다룬 '해외 우편' 등의 논픽션을 펴내기도 한 브룩스는 2001년 첫 장편 '경이의 해(年)'가 폭발적인 인기를 끌면서 세계적인 작가가 되었다. 2006년 발표한 두번째 장편 '마치'로 평단의 극찬을 받으며 퓰리처상을 수상했고, 2008년 출간한 세번째 장편 '피플 오브 더 북'은 출간 즉시 아마존, 뉴욕 타임스 베스트셀러에 오르며 영국, 프랑스, 독일, 스페인 등 28개국에 판권이 팔렸다. 그리고 해외 언론 클럽이 주는 할 보일 상, 2008년 오스트레일리아 올해의 책, 2009년 페기 V. 헬머리치 유명 작가상 등을 받았다. 현재 오스트레일리아와 미국을 오가며 저널리스트이자 작가인 남편 토니 호비츠와 두 아이와 함께 살고 있다.
