저자 앤토니어 수전 바이어트(Antonia Susan Byatt)는 1936년 영국 요크셔에서 태어났다. 케임브리지 대학과 요크 대학에서 수학하였고 1972년부터 런던 대학에서 교수로 재직하며 영미문학을 강의했다. 뛰어난 비평가이기도 했던 바이어트는 아이리스 머독의 소설 작품들을 연구 분석한 비평서 '자유도Degrees of Freedom'와 '워즈워스와 콜리지의 시대Wordsworth and Coleridge in Their Time' 등을 발표했고, 1983년 대학을 떠나 전업 작가로 활동했다. 바이어트 작품 중 최고의 걸작으로 꼽히며 '한 편의 로망스'라는 부제가 붙은 '소유'는 현대의 두 젊은 학자가 19세기 빅토리아 시대 두 남녀 시인의 로맨스를 추적하는 과정을 그린 작품이다.
