Guliver's Travels, first published in 1726, was read "from Cabinet-council to the Nursery". Written by Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) it was and still is one of the greatest satires written on human nature.

Captain Lemuel Gulliver takes voyages that end up at four fantastic places. The Lilliputians are only six inches tall. The land of Brobdingnag is populated with beings over sixty feet tall. He also visits a series of lands peopled by the most impratical groups. Lastly he visits a land ruled by horses where men are the laboring brutes.

Guliver's Travels was rated by George Orwell as one of the six most indispensable books in the world.

아일랜드의 소설가·성직자. 어릴 때부터 백부의 손에서 자랐으며, 더블린의 트리니티 칼리지를 졸업했다. 방종하고 게으른 학생이었으며, 특별한 배려로 졸업할 수 있었다. 영국 런던으로 나와 어머니 쪽 먼 친척인 당시 정치계의 거물 W. 템플 경 밑에서 비서 생활을 했다. 여기서 고전과 역사를 배웠으며, 여러 정치가와 접촉하며 차츰 정계에 야심을 품었다. 한때 아일랜드로 돌아가 목사가 되었으나 다시 템플 집안의 사람이 되었으며, 1690년대부터 시와 문장에도 손을 대기 시작했다. 1704년 1권으로 출간된 풍자소설 《책들의 싸움》(1704)과 《통 이야기》(1704)는 그의 초기 대표작이다. 《책들의 싸움》은 고대와 근대 어느 쪽의 문화가 더 나은가라는 당시 떠들썩했던 논쟁에 한몫 끼어 고전 찬미파를 지지했던 작품이다. 《통 이야기》는 가톨릭교·개신교·영국국교회의 싸움을, 부친으로부터 상속받은 웃옷을 서로 차지하려고 싸우는 3명의 아들에 비유하여 풍자한 작품이다. 두 작품 모두 당시의 정세에 어두운 오늘날 독자들에게는 읽기 어려운 작품이나 작자의 풍자 재능은 뚜렷하다. 이후 풍자·논쟁의 재능이 인정되어 당시 휘그당·토리당 두 당의 정치 논쟁이 격심한 가운데 정치저널리즘에 등장할 기회가 주어졌으나 공명출세를 서둘러 집필상의 절조가 없었으며, 때마침 정계 상황의 격변도 있고 의지했던 템플 경도 세상을 떠나 정치에 대한 야심을 단념했다. 1713년 이후에는 더블린의 성 패트릭교회 수석사제가 되었다. 이곳에서도 그는 불평·불만이 많았으며 평생 동안 번민에 쌓여 있었기에, 이는 태어난 이후의 기구한 경력과 함께 그를 남과 어울리기 싫어하는 성질로 만들어 더욱 통렬한 풍자의 길로 나아가게 했다. 이때 등장한 것이 《걸리버 여행기》(1726)로 아일랜드문학사는 물론 영문학사에서도 명작 또는 기작으로 평가되고 있다. 이외에도 세상에 널리 알려지지는 않았으나, 이름을 숨기고 출판한 《드레피어의 편지》(1724)는 영국의 열악한 통화 정책에 의한 아일랜드 착취를 신랄하게 공격하여, 필자 발견에 현상금을 걸 정도로 런던 정부를 당황하게 만들었다. 그는 1745년 10월 19일 더블린에서 사망하여 성 패트릭교회에 묻혔다. 죽은 뒤 출판된 《노비훈(奴婢訓)》(1745)은 남녀 하인들에게 어떻게 주인의 눈을 속이고 재물을 훔치는가를 가르치는 기이한 책이다. 이 밖에도 서간문 형식의 작품 《스텔라에게 보내는 일기》(1766년 이후 간행) 등이 있다.
