Chapter 7. Academic Discussion / Lectures and Question Types

The structure of this portion of the Listening Section is a little different than the other parts. For instance, even the graphics in the academic discussions and lectures are important. The following are the elements of the CBT TOEFL academic discussions and lectures:

* Narrator Introduction
The talk begins with one or two sentences that inform the test-taker of what class the following segment will be in. This is where you find out if you will be hearing a lecture or a discussion. It may also tell you what topic the professor is talking about. For lectures, pay particular attention to the portion of the lecture that is being discussed - usually the talk is a "mini-lecture," but sometimes you might hear the beginning or end of a longer lecture.

Examples
Listen to a talk by an economics professor discussing supply and demand.
Listen to the end of a lecture given by a professor of geology.
Listen to part of a lecture in an art history class.

* Subject Chalkboard
As the narrator reveals what subject will be discussed, the subject will also appear on the screen as if it was written on a chalkboard. Throughout the lecture, this chalkboard will be used to highlight important terms and concepts that are discussed. Pay careful attention to them, as they usually reinforce information that will be included in the questions that follow.

* Picture of the Classroom
The talk begins with a picture of the general setting in order to help you get oriented. If it is a lecture, you will have a picture of a professor lecturing. If it is an academic discussion, you will get a picture of a small classroom with the professor surrounded by students.

* Graphics and Visual Aids
Lectures and discussions usually have some sort of visual aspect to them. In addition to the chalkboard, there can also be diagrams, photos, maps, and charts. These can be very useful because it is easier to remember something you hear when you have visual reinforcement, and it is likely one or more of the questions will be based on some of the graphics or visual aids.

* Subject Categories
Lecture and discussion subjects can be classified into three general categories: Physical and Life Science, Arts and Humanities, and Social Science. The difficulty level is similar to what a student encounters in the introductory courses of the first year of college. The lectures are a little more abstract and difficult than at the high school level, and require the student to do some processing of information, instead of merely rote memorization. Topics found in more advanced university courses, however, are not included in the CBT TOEFL.

Remember, this is a LISTENING test, not a test of general knowledge, and the questions are generally written in such a way as to minimize the effects of knowing the subjects well or poorly. However, if you are able to use your knowledge to help you out, do so.

For example, if a question asks you what city is the capital of California, and the choices are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Diego, you can use your knowledge of geography to choose "Sacramento." A. Physical and Life Science These kinds of questions are now the most common type on the CBT TOEFL. Possible subjects include physics, biology, astronomy, psychology, and chemistry. The science is fairly elementary, and you should not find it difficult to understand on a technical level.

There is a fair amount of APPLIED science, too. So a lecturer is likely to talk about how a science can be used in real life to have practical effects.

B. Arts and Humanities
This is the second-most common subject type in the CBT TOEFL and includes subjects such as history, literature, music, and fine arts. Any lectures relating to the arts and humanities will exclusively be related to North America - usually the United States, but sometimes Canada or Central America. However, even if an art, music, literary, or dance style did not originate in North America, if it is prevalent in the United States, then it might be included in the CBT TOEFL.

Similarly, if an artist, musician, writer, or dancer was born in North America, but spent a great portion of his or her life outside North America, he or she can also be included as a subject.

In addition, topics in the Arts and Humanities lectures and discussions tend not to be very contemporary. Topics like heavy metal music or hip-hop are highly unlikely compared to jazz or 19th century music; cutting edge artists are less likely than Impressionists or other established figures.

Lectures about U.S. history tend to focus on the time between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, with the occasional topic from the colonial period, too. However, recent TOEFL tests have included topics as recent as President Franklin D. Roosevelt? New Deal of the 1930s.

C. Social Sciences
This is the least frequent type of lecture in the CBT TOEFL. The Social Science lecture type deals with how people function and interact, and includes subjects such as anthropology, geography, political science, urban studies and sociology. Of the different aspects of Social Science, Native American Indians and American geography are the two most common topics.

One of the most difficult parts of this section is simply remembering all the information, especially with the longer dialogues. You are NOT allowed to take notes, making this all the harder. And unrealistic - can you imagine not being allowed to take notes in a university class? Of course not.
