Something always remains after I write a poem. It doesn’t fill up no matter how much effort I put into it. Something remains, and that margin shames me. Lee Jae hoon lends his ears to silent beings in his poetry collection Rock is Thunder. To be precise, he opens the mouth of the silent. It’s to cut a sedimentary rock open, to open a Pandora’s box, to give air to the beings that are believed to not exist. This gentle, refreshing work is like bursting open the unique stories inside a rock, once more raising the beings that could but turn to stone. It’s returning the forgotten name to its owner.

Lee Jae hoon
Born in Yeongwol County, Gangwon Province, Lee made his literary debut in 1998 through the Modern Poetry magazine. His poetry collections include A Report on the Tribe Where My First Word Lives, Plutoed, Insect Mythology, and Biological Tears. He has also authored Modern Poetry and the Sense of Emptiness, The Poetics of Dilemma, The Rhetoric of Absence, Symptoms and Excess, and Fantasy and Topophilia, and a book of interviews, I Am a Poet. He has won the Young Poet Award from the Society of Korean Poets, the Best Poetry Award for Modern Poetry, the Korean Literary Award for Lyric Poems, and the Kim Manjung Literary Award.

Susan K received her BA in English Literature and Linguistics at the University of Toronto. After completing the Literature Translation fellowship program and the Media Translation fellowship program at the Literature Translation Institute of Korea, she now works as a full-time freelance translator of Korean literature and cultural contents. In 2021 she received grants from the LTI to translate the poetry collections One Person’s Closed Door (Park Soran) and We Could See the Monsoon Together (Park Joon). She translated Jeong Wooshin’s poetry collection I’ll Give You All My Promenade (Asia Publishers, 2022) and co-translated Kim Haengsook’s Human Time (Black Ocean, 2023).
