이 책이 속한 분야

불교는 천 수백 년 동안 이미 한민족의 뿌리 깊은 전통이기 때문이라는 설명보다는 좀 더 구체적인 원인과 동력을 찾아보기 시작하였다. 그 과정에서 두 가지의 실마리를 찾았다. 첫 번째는 절을 유지하는 경제활동이고 두 번째는 신앙활동이다. 경제활동은 사찰계에서 확인하였다. 사찰계는 승속이 함께 참여하면서 절의 재원을 확보하는 유효한 방편이었다. 사지와 문집, 비문과 현판 등에서 25종의 사찰계 232건을 탐색하여 조선후기 불교와 사찰계를 펴냈다. 이 책에서 사찰계가 억불의 시대, 사찰이 존속할 수 있었던 동력이 었다는 사실을 규명하였다. 사찰계의 역할은 절의 보사활동(補寺活動)이 목적이었지만, 여기서 그치지 않고 다양한 신앙활동으로 이어졌다. 대표적인 사례가 염불계였다. 계금을 모아 재원을 마련하는 것이 목적이었지만, 정기적인 계모임에서 염불수행을 행하고 정토신앙을 고취하였다. 염불계를 통한 수행은 마침내 만일회로 이어지고 1만일, 즉 27년이 넘는 긴 세월 동안 일종의 신앙공동체가 한 절에서 지속되었다.
