노벨문학상 수상작가 토니 모리슨의 다섯번째 장편소설. 수려한 문체와 풍요로운 은유, 물오른 마술적 리얼리즘의 비전을 통해 남북전쟁 직후의 노예제와 노예제가 남긴 상처의 뿌리를 캐고 끔찍했던 과거의 악몽과 대면하여 미국 흑인 종족사의 상처를 치유하고자 한 작품으로 1988년 퓰리처상 수상작이다. 한 흑인 여성이 노예 사냥꾼에게 자기 아이를 빼앗기지 않기 위해 아이의 목을 베어버린 1856년에 미국 신시내티에서 벌어진 실제 사건을 모티브로 가해자인 백인이나 피해자인 흑인 모두 망각하고 싶어했던 '노예제'를 처절한 모성애를 통해 재조명함으로써, '사랑받지 못한 자'들의 역사를 새롭게 써내려간, 기념비적인 작품.

Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby. Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe's new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved.

<table><tr><td>노벨문학상 수상자인 토니 모리슨은 미국 오하이오주 로레인에서 태어나 하워드 대학, 코넬 대학을 졸업하고 랜덤하우스 출판사 편집자로 일했다. 예일, 릿거스, 하워드 대학교, 올버니에 있는 뉴욕 주립대학교 등에서 출판 편집에 대한 강의를 하면서 작품 활동을 시작했다. 『빌러비드』로 1988년 퓰리처상을 받았고, 1993년에는 노벨문학상을, 1996년에는 미국 문학에 기여한 공로로 국립서적재단 메달을 받았다. 작품으로는 『술라』, 『가장 푸른 눈』, 『솔로몬의 노래』, 『재즈』, 『러브』 등이 있다. 프린스턴 대학의 기금교수로 재직했으며, 최근에는 아들 슬레이드 모리슨과 함께 어린이 문학책을 쓰고 있다. </td><td><img src="http://contents.kyobobook.co.kr/dtl/author/2000099801.jpg"></img></td></tr></table>
