미국의 철학자로 1931년 미국 뉴욕에서 태어나 시카고대학교를 졸업하고 동대학원에서 철학 석사학위를 받았으며 예일대학교에서 철학 박사학위를 받았다. 1961년부터 프린스턴대학교 철학과 교수로 재직했다. 프린스턴대학교에서 분석철학자로 활발하게 활동했지만 1970년대 중반부터 분석철학을 비판적으로 고찰하기 시작했다. 1979년에 출간한 『철학 그리고 자연의 거울(Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature)』은 진리 탐구로서의 철학의 종언을 선언하며 분석철학 전반을 비판했다. 철학과 동료 교수들과의 불화가 심화되자 1982년 버지니아대학교 인문학 석좌교수로 자리를 옮겨 철학과 영문학 등을 가르쳤다. 이후 1998년부터 스탠퍼드 대학 비교문학과 교수로 재직하다 2007년 타계했다.
