저자(글) George Orwell
동물농장과 1984년으로 잘 알려져 있는 영국의 소설가이다. 오웰은 필명이며, 본명은 에릭 블레어이다. 인도 벵골에서 영국인 하급 관리의 자녀로 태어났다. 오웰은 영국에 돌아와 명문 이튼 학교에서 교육을 받았고 1922년 인도 제국 경찰로 미얀마에 갔다. 그러나 식민지 경찰관으로서의 자신의 역할에 회의를 느낀 그는 어리 시절 꿈이었던 작가의 길을 걷기 위해서 유럽으로 되돌아왔다. 그후, 제국 지배에 대한 혐오감, 소외 계층과 함께 생활한 경험을 토대로 인간 내면의 강렬한 감정, 지독한 증오심 등을 표현한 작품으로 정치적 색채를 띤 작가가 되었다. 전체주의를 혐오한 오웰은 스페인 내전을 취재하러 갔다가 공화국 의용군으로 참전하기도 했다. 이 당시를 그린 것이 그의 첫 작품이 카탈루냐 찬가다. 또 공산주의를 비판하면서도 자신은 사회주의자라고 생각했으며, 문학 비평가이지만 지식인들을 싫어했다. 그는 자신의 삶 속에서뿐만 아니라 작품 속에서도 잔혹함과 거짓, 위선적인 말 등을 몹시 증오했다. 결핵으로 여러 번 입원하면서도 작업을 계속했으나, 1950년 1월 런던의 병원에서 죽었다.
