어원에 대한 이해를 통해 어휘를 체계적으로 정리해 두면 오랫동안 기억에 남게 된다. 영어 만 아니라 여러 과목을 동시에 준비해 나가야 하는 수험과정의 특징상 무작정 암기의 방식은 정말 암적인 존재이다. 갈등과 부담만 커지고 결국 아무것도 기대한 만큼 얻을 수 없는 결과를 가져온다. 각 실전문제마다 語源을 두어 쉽게 이해하게끔 자세한 설명을 붙였다.
2. 막연한 두려움과 거리감을 벗어 던지는 것이 관건이다.
이 책의 본문 진도 시작부분에 3~4페이지만이라도 시행착오를 각오하고 공부해보라.
어느덧 어휘에 대한 체계가 형성되어 가고 있다는 것을 직감할 것이다. 시작이 반이다. 이미 여러분은 반을 했고 나머지 절반을 향해 줄달음쳐 가는 것이다. 정상 정복은 결코 멀지 않다. 합격에 도달하는 필수 코스라는 확고한 믿음을 가지고 가다보면 정말 재미있는 것이 어휘학습이다.
3. 주요 접두어(Prefix)와 어근(Word Root)만 알면 어휘는 나의 것!
출제 대상이 될 만한 주요 어휘는 대부분 주요 접두어와 어근이 들어있다. 영어를 웬만큼 알만 한 사람이라면 이러한 어휘야 말로 주요 출제대상의 중심이 된다는 사실을 알고 있다.
품사를 알려주는 접미어는 특별히 다루지 않아도 영어에 대한 기초만 있어도 이미 알고 있는 것들이 대분이며 語源설명 부분에서 자연스럽게 이해되게 설명했다. 접미어는 특수한 경우만 조금 주의를 기울이면 된다.
4. 후반부로 갈수록 익숙한 어휘들의 비중에 점차 많아진다는데!
초반부는 접두어 중심이다. 접두어를 하다보면 주요 어근을 건드리지 않을 수 없다. 대부분의 단어는 ‘접두어+어근’으로 구성되어 있기 때문이다. 나중에 어근으로 들어가다 보면 접두어에 서 보았던 어휘들을 접할 수밖에 없다. 진도가 진행되면 복습효과를 얻을 수 있다. 상승효과(Synergy Effect)를 적극적으로 활용하자.
5. 어휘의 출제 비중은?
최근 5년간의 출제된 문제를 분석해 보면 경찰공무원(어휘비중이 특별히 높음)과 법원직을 포함한 9,7급 공무원의 어휘비중은 약 25~30%이다. 그런데 최근 시험일수록 어휘 비중이 지속적으로 상승해가는 경향이 있다. 사실상 독해지문 속에 나오는 주요 표현이 대부분 어휘력에서 나오는 것이므로 어휘력에 비례하여 독해력이 향상되고 이것은 곧 전체적인 영어점수의 고득점 달성으로 직결된다.
6. 참고사항
대부분의 접두어(Prefix)는 자신의 고유한 뜻이 정해져 있으나 일부에 국한하여 ‘강조’의 특성으로 사용되는 경우가 있다. 이 경우 용어상은 ‘intensive'라고 하지만, 그 의미는 ’completely(완전히)‘ 정도로 보면 무난하고 이를 기준으로 어원을 설명하였다.
